Eden Real Review

Edenh Real Arena, Punta Cana Review

Here is my review of the Edenh Real Resort in Punta Cana Domican Republic. I stayed at the resort for 7 days in the end of January 2008. Below you will find the good, the bad and the ugly. Click on the photos for larger versions of them!

First, I think anyone who is considering staying at this resort should know a few things.

1) The bathrooms in the hotel rooms offer basically no privacy. There is no wall separating the sleeping area from the hot tub and the shower/toilet. The shower and toilet are echo chambers with frosted glass doors. So you don't want to be staying in a room with someone you don't know well or don't want to get to know (alot) better. Even if you never use the bathroom or take a shower, there is no place to just change your clothes except in one of those two "rooms". Europeans probably won't think anything of this, but Americans, for example, probably will! The frosting on the glass works alright overall, but you can still see shapes and colors of things, making it uncomfortable to shower or use the toilet. Also, in one of the rooms I was in, there was a large enough gap between the wall and the door to see right into the toilet area if you were standing anywhere near it. I hope they will fix that and other problems that have cropped up as a result of the hotel being newly constructed. (Leaky pipes, broken stairs, etc)

Here is a photo showing the room with the bathroom and shower. I am not sure why there is a door for this area at all. (This photo was taken by someone else and it is linked via photobucket.com)

2) The resort has beautiful tile work everywhere. Some of it unpolished travertine marble and in other areas such as the hallways and inside your room or polished marble. The problem is that the polished tile can be quite slippery. You'll want to wear slip proof shoes. While I was at the resort a woman fell and broke her wrist, she had to be flown home for surgery. When it rains the hotel staff will come around with brooms to push away water from the hallway areas (they aren't enclosed completely) to try to help dry up the water, but inside your room, the floors can be rather slippery too. I am not sure why they don't use squeegees to push away the water--it would be much faster and easier.

3) The hotel fumigates for mosquitos every day in the outside areas at 5:30pm. This is great, I believe I was never bitten once while I was outside of my room. However, I went home with no less than 20 mosquito bites, in spite of wearing repellent (maybe they should call it attractant) and in spite of spending time every night knocking off whichever mosquitos I could suss out. I am not sure if January is just mosquito season in Dominican Republic or what, but they are voracious and nasty tiger mosquitos there. I did notice that the hotel staff gave one woman who was complaining about this some sort of small electronic zapper, but it was only after she wanted a room on a higher floor that they gave that to her. Unfortunately, she was misguided because my room was on the 4th floor (the highest) and there were plenty of mosquitos to go around. The fact that the maid will prop open your door while he/she cleans your room guarantees you a daily, fresh supply.

4) The hotel can be rather noisy because of all the marble floors. If you are a light sleeper, you might want to bring ear plugs. I have been to a few resorts in Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico, and this seems to be relatively common. Hopefully your room will not be near an elevator though. Because unfortunately, if one of your fellow guests decides to hold the doors to the elevator open for too long, you will be treated to a very loud peircing beeping noise, guaranteed to wake up even a sound sleeper.

Here is a video with that sound, just so you know I am not exaggerating, but be forewarned that there is a loud noise in it. It is almost as loud outside the elevator. Our room was 3 rooms away from the elevator. This sound will wake most people up. Hopefully the hotel will get the message and tone it down. I surreptitiously recorded this in the elevator.

In one of the rooms we were staying in (we changed rooms on the first night and second night), the pipes were also very noisy. When someone above flushed the toilet you'd hear the water coming down. And sometimes there was a vibrating noise coming from the pipes, giving off a kind of a squeal. Our third room did not have this problem.

5) If you are traveling with a baby that sleeps in a crib, the hotel has cribs. The problem with them is that they are very shallow and cannot be adjusted. We have a one year old who can stand up and she would certainly have fallen out of the crib if we didn't rig something up (we put the crib between a wall and a bed, and then blocked off the remaining side with a chair.) The hotel desk staff didn't seem to see the shallow cribs as a problem so I don't imagine that they will be getting different cribs anytime soon.

Now that those items are out of the way, I will try to give you some idea of a few areas of the hotel.

Here is a link to a map of the resort (click to enlarge)

THE LOBBY
The lobby is beautiful. Its creative and fresh in appearance. Hopefully you won't spend much time there! My only comment about the check-in was that they really need to use ropes like in the airport rather than just let lines develop free-form. I was always in the wrong line--and I unfortunately had to stand in the lines twice when I arrived because check-in wasn't until 3pm and I had arrived at 1pm. (Actually I didn't get a room until about 3:45, but it wasn't the room I had made a reservation for, so we had to move to another room, and were finally settled by 5:30pm) They had about 10 different lines going at the same time and some of them moved really slowly (whichever one I was in, to be exact!) There continue to be reports from people about not being able to get rooms immediately when they get to the hotel, so just in case, you might want to pack changes of clothes/bathing suits in your carry on.

ROOMS
When complete, there will be about 600 rooms at Edenh Real Arena. 200 of those will be club rooms and 400 will be regular "deluxe" rooms. The rooms are nicely appointed and are rather chique. Again, if you can get past my warning about the bathroom area above, you will like your room. Every room has a hot tub, and some of them are actually on the balcony instead of in the bathroom area. This makes for some enjoyable late night, semi-private hot tubbing. The hotel provides bubble bath and bath salts to add enjoyment. If you're lucky enough to get a room that doesn't overlook the hotel laundry area or a barbed wire fence, this can be really good. Unfortunately, only the rooms that are facing the "inside" of the hotel have good views and the bad views are REALLY bad. [Note: Many of you have written to ask me how the odds are of upgrading to a room with a better view if they initially receive a bad one. Unfortunately, I don't really know, but I will bet they're not good based on the fact that I'll bet there are many folks who will also want to upgrade and given the fact that week after week I read reports of the hotel being overbooked and folks who have paid for upgraded views aren't getting them. There are two main buildings of rooms in rooms that start with a 1, you'll want an even numbered room for a decent view. In building 2, you'll want an odd numbered room for a good view.]

There is a safe in the room for your valuables and laundry service and rooms service is available. The room service is 24 hours. Our room had have an iron, a nice flat screen TV with 100 different channels including US Networks, CNN, Fox News, Discovery Channel, etc., iron, a hairdryer and two telephones. (I only placed one phone call to Europe for $1/minute). One thing noticeably absent from the rooms and elsewhere were clocks. So if you want to know when to show up for your dinner reservation, bring a watch or bring a friend with a watch. (Note that Dominican Republic is an hour later than USA Eastern Standard Time)

The maid service was okay but inconsistent, and sometimes strange. For instance, we had a box of tissue in our bathroom approximately every other day. I guess the room that adjoined ours got it on the other days. The amenities were shampoo, conditioner, soap, bath salts, bubble bath, tooth brush/tooth paste, shower cap, mouth wash and shower gel. Don't make the mistake I made once: the mouth wash and shower gel are about the same size and color. Yes, in fact, I did wash my mouth out with shower gel, and I think I still haven't quite gotten that taste out of my mouth.

FOOD
The restaurants were all very nice, and the food very good. Service in all the restaurants was inconsistent but that was mainly because they seemed to be understaffed. There are 5 main choices: Buffet, American Food, Italian Food, French Food or Asian Food. There is also a pool-side restaurant with a small selection of hamburgers, chicken, pizza, and desserts such as soft-ice cream cones.

The Buffet
The buffet was definitely the nicest resort selection I have ever seen (outside of Las Vegas). The food was delicious and there was a reasonable variety of foods. Fish, lamb, beef, salads and deserts were amoung the many choices there. In the morning they had a smoothie station and omlete station. In the afternoons, they had a carving station (with beef, pork or lamb) and a grilling station with pasta and meats. I am pretty sure that I consumed my weight in smoked salmon (which always seemed to be on hand for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner).

Here is a video of the buffet at breakfast.

There is an outdoor seating area too. When the weather is cool this is a great place to come sit and relax. A picture of the area is to the right.

Specialty Restaurants
Of the four main restaurants, the Asian restaurant was our best experience. You have two choices there--you can sit at the Hibachi and they cook for you there in a showman style or sit at individual tables. In both cases the food was great. At the Hibachi they will cook fried rice, shrimp, beef and chicken before your eyes. At the regular tables, they offer appetizers and soups such as Spicy Shrimp Soup, Spring Rolls, Seaweed Salad, Beef Skewers and Suno Mono (Octupus, Conch, Rice Vinegar, and sesame seeds) and sushi. For dessert they offered fruits, cakes and Mango Soup with lentils. It is all served in an artistic culinary manner.

The American Restaurant has beef and fish, and is decorated kind of like TGI Fridays or the like. The service in this restaurant was very slow relative to the other 3 restaurants...which means it was VERY slow. The food was quite good and worth the wait. I had a Greek salad there and beef and lobster for the entree.

The Italian restaurant was also a nice experience. The linguine with seafood was delicious and so were some of the other entrees I tried bites of such as Chicken Catcitori and Beef Scalopini. The mixed salad with Gorgonzola cheese dressing was small and tasted so-so, but the presentation was very nice.

The romantic French restaurant was okay. I was disappointed with the bitter taste of the lobster bisque with squid ink. The rest of the food I had there was forgettable to the point that I can't remember what I had. Kids aren't allowed in this restaurant, but I didn't know that, and I brought mine. Nobody said a word about it...which is surprising because they definitely enforce other rules such as needing reservations and men not wearing shorts in any of the restaurants.

The hotel has not decided whether to use reservations for the restaurants or not. While we were there, they implimented a reservation system which has since been changed or revoked. If you are a VIP customer, you will not need reservations. This system is very iffy and can mean long waits or no access to a given restaurant on a given night.

TIP: If someone in your group is having a birthday, let the hotel staff know in the morning and they will literally bake you a cake and write a message on it. They did it for us and I was impressed!

TIP: The hotel does provide Dasani Bottled water (and some other brands). You can ask the bar tenders for it or you can get the waiters in the restaurants to get it for you. We drank the water that waiters poured for us without problems. I belive the hotel filters it automatically.

THE STAFF

The rank and file staff of the hotel were mostly very helpful and friendly. With the exception of the front desk staff, everyone was quite helpful. The front desk staff were overwhelmed and sometimes rude. Other than that, the only problem I ever had with a staff member was when I called the bell desk to have someone pickup my bags, they transfered me to someone who I asked "Can you send someone down to come pick up my bags?" The reply a simple "NO." I repeated the question and got the same answer. I am sure it was some kind of misunderstanding, or language barrier issue. On that note, try to speak Spanish if you know any. Its not required, not all the staff members speak much English, but everyone tries.

While you're there, definitely consider tipping even though it isn't required. I can't say I ever got any better service level because I did tip, but I know the money was needed and appreciated. The hotel has a medical doctor on staff. I didn't use the service while I was there, so I have no idea about the quality of the care or if there are any costs associated.

THE BEACH
We had a great time at the beach. YES there is alot of seaweed in the water and on the beach. If you can overlook that, it won't be long before you don't notice it. They use a beach raking vehicle at night to clean up any trash and debris that was left during the day. The water is warm and blue and the whole area is really quite beautiful.

There are plenty of tanning beds, but the ones by the beach get reserved pretty early, so I would recommend that you get to the beach early before breakfast to get one. If they run out you will probably be able to get one by the pool instead.

There are waiters/waitresses who will take you order and bring drinks to you at the beach and pool. Our experience with them wasn't very good. They are first of all few and far between and second it takes a long time to get your drink. If you're really thirsty, you're better off getting up and walking over to one of the bars yourself.

Here are a couple of panoramas of the beach (click to enlarge!)

Towels are given out at the pool area. They are good quality, big towels. There aren't any rules about how many towels can be borrowed at a time. This is probably why they did run out of them a few times while we were there, but I am sure they will rectify this problem.

You can take out a catamaran--there is a beach front office for this. You can also check out balls and rafts from the "adventure office" which is also where you pick up your towels. They also are offering scuba lessons in the pool.

Near the water there are two spa cabanas where you can get a message. At this time, a 50 minute Swedish message will set you back about 77 dollars. A 50 minute deep tissue message about 85. They offer braiding and other spa services as well. I recommend a message here.

THE GROUNDS
The grounds are beautiful. The design of the landscaping and the fountains is really nice. They did a good job with this! Here is a video with some of the hotel grounds.

THE POOLS

There were a few pools to choose from...all of them very nice. Three of them had swim-up bars with some very entertaining bartenders who can balance beverages on their heads! If you get to the pool early, you may be able to get shelter from the sun under a cabana or pergola...there seems to be alot more demand for these than there is supply. Note that some of the pools/swim up bars are for VIP guests only. To be honest I am not sure which ones because they weren't marked in any way that I could discern.

ENTERTAINMENT
Whoever is in charge of entertainment at the hotel was doing a very good job. They had lots of things going on all the time. There were meringue lessons, painting classes, aerobics and volleyball (water and sand varieties). And at night there was always a show of some sort--from a cirque de soleil style acrobatics show to las Vegas lounge singer Cris Blizzard. Pictured to the right is an area they sometimes use for entertainment. There is a stage slightly out of the picture to the right. They also just opened the "Crystal Theater" for an indoor venue. One day while we were on the beach, some local kids came by with musical instruments. For the price of a small tip, the serenaded us with a rendition of Feliz Navidad.

There is a sports bar with a large screen television. In the evening you can go to the rooftop Tanhtra bar. The bar is very nice and romantic. My only reservation about the place is that its a long flight of stairs to get to it...and to get back down, so those who may have overimbibed there should be very careful.

There are two grades of liquor at the resort. The folks who pay for upgraded rooms, etc, will be able to have the premium drinks and access to additional swimming pools.

There is also a temporary gym room available if you'd like to work out. The resort has not finished their permanent gym as of this writing.

The resort has an internet center right near the main lobby. They have a few computers in there, and they charge a minimum of $4 for 15 minutes use. I was disappointed that the one machine they had with a memory card reader wouldn't work--I was hoping to download some of the photos I took and email them to friends. I was somewhat surprised that there were many people hanging around the lobby with laptops accessing the internet (instead of on the beach, for instance). I never found out how to access the internet that way because I didn't have a laptop along anyway. For some it may be worthwhile to carry a computer to place calls home over the internet through skype or Vonage (see this Vonage review if you're curious about it)

If you want to get out of the resort to check out other attractions on the island, there are lots of excursions available. You can check with your vacation representative for ideas such as tours of Santa Domingo or swimming with the dolphins. You can get an idea of some of the available tours by visiting: http://www.amstardmc.com/excursionslistpc.asp

KID FRIENDLINESS
The hotel seems to be pretty good for kids. They have a kids club that looked like fun. One night they even had a special activity in the evening hours--a special show for kids with an artist spray painting. Of the 4 restaurants, all but one allows kids. High chairs are available in all the restaurants (including the French restaurant where kids aren't allowed, go figure). This also seems like a good place to mention that the local people who work at Edenh Real really seem to LOVE babies. I've never had so many men and women come up to our baby and look, play, touch and even walk away holding her (jokingly). Normally she would get upset being held by strangers but for some reason she didn't mind at all.

I did not notice any special play equipment for children, but there is a baby pool.

HANDICAPPED ACCESS
Overall, it looked like the resort was accessible. I noticed a couple of people who were using wheel chairs and they seemed to be able to get around the resort okay. I am not sure about the buffet and restaurants though.

OVERALL COMMENTS
Unfortunately, I do not think I would return to Edenh Real. Although the place is beautiful, I would look for another resort the next time I go to Punta Cana. If I were asked who would have the best time here, I would say it would be someone who is there with people they know well, and who doesn't plan to spend alot of time in their room.

We went to Edenh with Apple Vacations. Our Apple Vacation representative at the hotel (Evelyn) was very helpful in getting some of the issues we had addressed. If you haven't tried Apple Vacations before, I recommend you do. They are organized and have staff to help you all along the way (at the airports and hotels of the destination city).

Also, by the way, in case you're wondering, the H in the EdenH Real name is because the hotel is part of the European NH Hotels chain. So their gimmick is to add h's to n's...for example, there is a bar at the resort called the tanHtra too.

I am impressed at the number of people who have been reading this blog and emailing me. At the moment there are about 100 people per day reading this review. If any of you go to the Edenh Real Arena resort and notice improvements on things I have written about or think I've left something important out, please let me know.

Thank you sooo much for the review! It is very detailed and I think gives a very realistic view on the resort. I'm headed there in March and I'm hoping that things will be running a little smoother by then - however I will have fun just the same! Thanks again!

You're welcome! I hope you won't, but if you have any problems, see Evelyn at the Apple Vacations desk (even if you didn't come with Apple she'll still try to help you). If there is a problem that is solvable, I know she will try to help you.

Great, balanced review! I've been reading so many negative reviews, and yours let me know that the problems that exist are ones I can deal with :).

Do you happen to know which part of the hotel the Mirage Deluxe rooms are in?

Thanks!

Edenh Real Review said...

Thank you. I don't know about the Mirage Deluxe Rooms. One thing I do know is that they call their regular rooms "deluxe" so that might mean they could be anywhere. Maybe someone else could respond to this question.

Great job!!!
The best unbiased review on this resort that I've seen to date.
We'll be there March break and think we'll be fine based on your report. We're there for the sun, beach, ocean and plain relaxation so looks like evrything in that regard is covered.
Otherwise, every resort has it's issues and knowing that this was new in advance will prepare us for the occasional inconveniences. The price was definately a bonus as well.
Cheers!!

Hey Thanks for the in depth review. We are thinking of going there in June for 2 weeks. I'm hoping that some of the issues that you had will have worked out by then. We go with 4 other couples and teenage kids, so we usually have a good time almost wherever we go. We enjoy relaxing, good food and good drinks. Do they have a Disco or a place to dance after the evening entertainment? I thought I also read that they have a casino did you see it? One of the main reason I'm still really interested in the hotel, is the price. Thanks for your help. Laura

Thanks so much for your help and honest opinion. I am heading down there next month (feb 17th) and hope some things do work themselves out. I am not a person to complain about much. The only thing I will have a problem with is if it rains all week. Last time I was in Punta Cana it rained all week and brought those mosquitos out. I am just looking to enjoy the wonderful sunshine and warm temperatures. Again, thank you so much for unbiased review. Keep up the good work

Hi Again, Thank you for the compliments on the review. I still don't consider it finished, but its getting there.

As far as the price, somebody (another visitor) told me there were plans to raise the price to stay there very soon by alot. I have no idea how accurate that rumor is, but I know we got to stay at a "5 Apple" resort much cheaper than is typical. This reviewer has stayed at 3, 4 and 5 (Red) Apple resorts and the main difference that sticks out for me was the quality and variety of foods available. I believe the last time I stayed on Bavaro Beach was at a 4 Apple Hotel which had one restaurant and a buffet. I got bored of the food pretty quickly. My main reason for going to Punta Cana was just for a sunny beach.

Edenh does have a place you can go and dance--the open air TanHtra bar. Seemed nice but never got there while it was in full swing because of our baby. We had perfect weather most of the time we were there. There were a couple of rainy/windy days but even those had sunshine in between. Our average temperature was probably about 82 degrees.

They do not have a casino yet, but there is supposed to be one opening. They did provided a shuttle bus to another resort's casino though. I am sure it won't be long before it is open though.

Thanks for the review. When you say there is weeds in the ocean do you mean washed up and floating or do you mean they are growing off the bottom in the swiming area? Thanks.

Edenh Real Review said...

The seaweed is floating in the water and washing up onto shore. It looks like there is a seaweed bed growing a bit further offshore, past the roped off swimming area. When you swim, you'll definitely run into some things floating around, but not growing on the bottom. I will add to the review the fact that I saw them driving around in a beach raker vehicle at night to clean up whatever remnants are there, but if you click on my photo of the beach, you'll see there was plenty of weed washed up. The area a little further from the water where the shade umbrellas are has soft, clean white sand though.

Hi. Our family is going to EdenH in May and we've been struggling to find out more information-your review was SO helpful (especially since we'll be traveling with our daughter who will be 18 mo-and may now bring a pack-n-play). We understand there is supposed to be a casino there. Did you see it or hear when it will be open?? Also, did the resort offer decent trips/excursions?

Edenh Real Review said...

I don't really know when the casino will open. Sorry, but they do provide a shuttle bus to the offsite casino. I'd say that they'd be making the casino a top-priority since those are such big money makers!

As far as excursions, there are lots. If you're traveling with Apple Vacations see the tour representative or go to the orientation meeting.

I have been on the safari...that's pretty cool...they take you around to plantations, a school, someone's house, etc...and so you get to know a little more about the Dominican Republic. They also have excursions to Santa Domingo (They have Christopher Columbus' heart there--seriously--the rest of him is in Europe) or La Romana...they also have swim with the Dolphins and various party boats.

If you want to know more or get an idea of pricing, go to Apple Vacations's website--here is a link to their list:

Best of luck!

Hi,

How did you request the crib? In advance or upon arrival?

Can you tell me what the crib's dimensions are, please?

Thanks,

Thanks so much for the detailed review. We are headed to the Edenh Real this Friday. One question about the rooms...Are the rooms equipped with hairdryers and irons? We are headed with the expectations that this is a new resort. My husband and I have been to Punta Cana six times and are looking forward to returning. Thanks!

Edenh Real Review said...

Hello-

With regards to the question about the crib dimensions, I'd say it was about 4 feet long, 3 feet wide and about 1.5 feet deep. We requested it when we got there. You should be able to enlarge the photo I posted with the crib to get a good idea of the way it is setup. It would have been much more useful if we could have adjusted it to make it deeper. Another couple we spoke to had a very active 10 month old with them, they couldn't use the crib at all because they'd put her in and she'd just crawl right out onto the bed (they also wedged the crib between two beds to make up for the shallowness of it.

Hope this helps.

Good question, I will add this into the review when I get a chance. Our room did have an Iron, a nice flat screen TV, a hairdryer and two telephones (one in the toilet area).

Thank for all of the information. I have read many review, your was the most comprehensive. I have one question. Did you see any tennis courts?

Edenh Real Review said...

The tennis courts weren't built yet when I was there. The map in the review shows where they're supposed to be in the front of the hotel, but that is still a major construction zone at this time.

Thanks for all the info. It's so hard to know if some people just like to complain or if things really are bad. After reading your review and folling the questions and your anwsers, I feel as if you are being fair and honest about Edenh. Thank you so much for that. Can you tell me if the room service is included in the all-inclusive package. I also booked with Apple. I up graded to the apple club but am not sure what exactly that means.

This is a great blog. We're headed there in April, so I have a couple of questions: Did you have to get any vaccinations before you went to the DR due to all the mosquitos? Also, does the resort offer day trips to Santo Domingo?

Edenh Real Review said...

Hi - I believe that the room service was "free". If I was charged, I didn't notice. I know I was charged about $1/minute for a call to Europe from my room, but didn't see any other charges on my bill.

I don't know what "apple club" is--sorry.

you've given an incredibly in-depth, helpful review. thank you for taking the time to do it! do you know whether people are able to be moved to rooms with regular (private) bathrooms if they ask? we have two children (ages 5 and 8) and i don't want to get naked in front of them!

Edenh Real Review said...

As far as vaccinations, I don't really know.

As far as Santa Domingo, yes, definitely. Here's a cut & paste from the Apple Vacation's website:

Santo Domingo Tour

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the first city in the “New World” and the capital of the Dominican Republic. Visit the palace of Diego Columbus (son of Christopher) and the conquistadors' headquarters for over 60 years; marvel at the Cathedral Santa Maria La Menor (first in the New World); and tour the Royal House Museum, offering a panoramic view of Columbus Lighthouse & Museum. These are just a few of the spectacular sites of this rich colonial city. Enjoy 45 minutes to explore on your own the treasures found on El Conde Street (first commercial street in the New World). All entrance fees and buffet lunch (one drink) are included. Duration: Full Day

Hi- Thank you for the compliment. The privacy issue was really a big deal for me, as one of the people staying in the room was my mother-in-law.

The concensus I got from the staff of the hotel is that only the "club" rooms (short for Paradise Club, I think!) have dividers between the bathroom area and the sleeping area (which BTW, do not go all the way to the ceiling--there is still a foot or two you could stand on something and look through.) The club rooms are about a $100/night upgrade.

If the management of this hotel ever reads this review, I hope they will hear us on this and at least add a few additional rooms with dividers that aren't upgraded (price) club rooms. If they really want to attract North American families with children, this could be an issue for alot of us (and from other parts of the world too).

I was moved to a club room on my second night at the resort because of this issue and another issue to do with noise. So its not impossible, but I have a feeling I got very very lucky.

Hope this helps

Great pics, and I agree about the many problems. I won't be returning, ever! thx.

Great review. When we booked we tried to get a Edenh Club room b/c we thought it would be ocean front. We ended up upgrading to just Apple Club, b/c Edenh Club was booked. (We are going in June.) Do you know if those upgrades make any differnece? Is there an adult only pool? My husband and I are traveling for our anniversary.

I am really not sure about the Edenh Club vs. Apple Club rooms. Sorry.

As far as Adult's only pools, there wasn't one. Truthfully, while we were there, there was hardly ever very many people in any of the pools, with the exception of the middle pool with the swim-up bar (the people were at the bar) and when they were doing the daily water aerobics activity.

The pools don't connect, but they are in pretty close proximity to each other. Maybe it was because the water in the pools was kind of cold (relatively speaking) and the temperature was only in the low 80s, but I went into the main pool a few times. I really don't know.

Whatever this is worth, during our stay, the ocean water was warmer than the pool.

Thanks once again for the great detailed review. I have booked the EdenH and i am going there April 20
I was just wondering if it is possible to request an ocean view suite open your arrival? and what room numbers would you recommend going to for less noise and stuff like that?

Edenh Real Review said...

I am sure you can _try_ to request an ocean view/pool view room. I imagine that those are in high demand though, especially given the current views people on the "outside" rooms get. (Barbed wire fences, construction fences, employee villas, laundry...)

There are two main buildings with rooms that are parallel to each other. The building on the left (looking towards the ocean) has 4 digit room numbers that begin with 1, the building on the right has room numbers that begin with 2.

The next digit is which floor you are on. So people in room 1119 are on the first floor of the left hand building. People in room 2408 are on the forth floor of the right hand building.

I really don't know about the rooms in the building that has rooms that start with "2", but on in the left hand building, rooms that are even numbered face the pool/ocean.

In my opinion you want to be on the 4th floor with an even numbered room (at least in building 1). With the higher room numbers, you will not have noise from the pipes when people shower/flush toilets.

Hope this helps and I wish you good luck and a great trip.

This was by far the most informative review I have read.
I was wondering if you have a VIP room, do they have a specific desk for check in?

Edenh Real Review said...

There did seem to be a VIP room for check-in, but unfortunately for me, I wasn't VIP enough for that...and instead stood in the regular check-in line at the front desk.

Fantastic Blog! I leave this weekend and heard there is a temporary gym set up. Have you seen this and can your briefly tell me what it is like? Machine equipment, free weights, treadmill, all of the above?

Thanks!

Edenh Real Review said...

I didn't go to the gym, so I can't answer the question, except to confirm that they had it setup in a temporary room. Sorry.

I hope you enjoy your stay!

I must say this has been the best review we have seen. Great job with the videos. The one with the elevator gave us a chuckle :0) We are heading down in March. Question: Are the mosquitos that bad? Thanks so much for the review. Adios!

Edenh Real Review said...

The mosquitos in the rooms were pretty bad. I hope they figure out a way to deal with it. I never quite worked out where they came from, but I think they come into the room when the maid props open your door while cleaning, or through the air conditioner vents. You might try putting your do-not-disturb sign on for a couple of days to see if you stop getting new ones. Meanwhile, bring off or skin so soft and wear it as needed.

Again, I don't think they were a big problem outside the room, only in the room. Nevertheless, I think they should make mosquito the state bird of the DR.

Great review...the best yet!!! I'm thinking about going there in March but unsure due to all the negative reviews. Your review answered alot of questions I did have. Is there alot of noise due to construction? and does this noise stop you from relaxing around the pool or beach? I have also heard people are getting bumped to over resorts, is this true? Hopefully in a month or so things will be alot better. I have also hear that the food in the buffett is cold when it should be hot, is this true?

Thanks again for all the photos.....

Edenh Real Review said...

With your doubts in mind, you might want to look for another resort because I can't answer for sure how things will be by the time March rolls around. I would tell folks who aren't prepared for some inconveniences to stay away from Edenh until it is declared finished. (Although I also mention some problems in my review that were unconnected to the hotel being under construction.)

To answer your questions though, I was never disturbed much my the construction noise. I mostly heard it during the day while I was on the beach and it was pretty easy to ignore. Some people did complain they were woken up by workers banging, but in theory they aren't supposed to start work until 8 or 9am. (with a baby we were up by 7am anyway).

Indeed people were sent to other hotels because of overbooking. I think this was a growing pain, that I think will be sorted out before long.

I never noticed food that was the wrong temperature on the buffet, but I don't doubt other folks reports that they did have that issue.

Great review! Thank you so much. We are going in three weeks. Does the resort provide bottled water?

Thanks!
Geri

Edenh Real Review said...

The hotel does provide Dasani Bottled water (and some other brands). You can ask the bar tenders for it or you can get the waiters in the restaurants to get it for you. We drank the water that waiters poured for us without problems. I think they must filter it.

Anonymous said...

Ok I have a few questions... YOU are aware that the resort opened on January 10 2008. ALL of the problems that you were complaining about were all just opening jitters. They are all problems that worked out in a couple of weeks. You are creating panic where there shouldnt be any. And to make another point, you probally did not pay a whole lot for this resort. How can you complain that much? I suggest that if people are that worried about this Resort then they need to call their travel agents. There is no reason to create this much negativity. If you read some of the responses you already have people worried about thier upcoming vacations.

Edenh Real Review said...

I am sorry we disagree about the resort. I don't think I am creating negativity or panic. People want to know about the resort they are going to. When did you stay there and what was your experience?

Your comments leave me wondering if you work for Edenh Real or NH Hotels.

If you are just a concerned citizen, then you should know that I think my review is very even handed. There are good and bad things in my review, but many of the bad things have nothing to do with the hotel being new.

I wrote what I felt and I think most people who read the review will get that point. I am certainly open to people letting me know where I was wrong. For instance, if they make the marble less slippery, get new cribs that aren't dangerous for children who can stand, change the configuration of the bathrooms, stop taking dinner reservations in a counter-productive way, etc. I would be open to making note of that in my review. These are valid concerns and I am not the only one complaining about them. Nobody warned me about these issues before I went to the resort.

A review is a snapshot in time. I hope the hotel does improve what it can. I won't be going back, at least not on my dime, so I will have to depend on other people to give updates.

Do they really have vip pools for vip guests or can anyone use all the pools? I think you've done a fantastic job with your review. I was very unsure until I read your reveiw. Some people will complain about anything and be disappointed. I'm happy for clean and kept.

traveller 2008 said...

Great review! Disappointed re the bathroom facilities..... have heard that there is a lot of nudity at this resort?? Please advise.

Edenh Real Review said...

At the time I visited there were no VIP pools, anyone could go into any of the pools. I would add that all of the 5 pools were in rocks throwing distance from each other, so I think it would be kind of weird for them to try to prevent non-VIPs from going into a particular pool. I guess they could build a fence around one of them, but that would definitely ruin the beautiful poolscape layout they have there.

Edenh Real Review said...

I don't know if I would say there was alot. There was definitely some though. There were a few topless women around the pools and on the beach and occassionally there were some very risque bathing suits.

Hi, I really like your review of the hotel and I have a few questions. I am looking to go around June but haven't book yet (I can't decide which resort I like). I will be traveling with a 3 year old. I see that they have a kids club, but do you know if they have any areas specifically for kids, i.e. playground or kiddie pool.
I was also wondering how big is the resort, do they have like golf cart to go from one place to the other or do you have to walk.
One last question have you visited any other resorts in Punta Cana that you have liked more than this one.

Edenh Real Review said...

Hello-

They do have a kiddie pool at the resort. I don't recall having ever seen a playground though. That may be something they are still planning to build.

The resort is pretty big. It took me 5 minutes to walk from the beach to the lobby of the hotel. If you click on the map that I have in my review, you'll get an idea of the size of the place. They did have a golf cart that I occasionally saw them using to transport people and bags to their rooms, but I think that was mostly for folks who couldn't walk or had lots of bags. You will have to walk wherever you are going.

I don't have a recommendation for other hotels in Punta Cana. I have been traveling to other destinations in the recent past, so I don't have up-to-date information.

I hope you have a great time no matter which resort you select.

What is up with the bathrooms. We are going in Feb. You think I can tack a bedsheet on that window between the bathroom and the bedroom??

Edenh Real Review said...

Hi--

Yes- I believe the frame around the window opening between the bathroom area and sleeping area is just wood. So you could bring some thumbtacks with you and tack up a sheet or a bedspread. That won't help the sound issues, but at least you'd have more privacy.

Please write back after your trip and let me know how things were for you there.

You wrote a great review! It is very informative. I am going in March with my kids, age 12 & 14. The brochure says there is a Junior Club for 12-14 year olds, did you happen to notice it at all during your stay? I assume it might be in the area of the Kids Club, but haven't heard it mentioned on any of the reviews I've read. Thanks for your help, and again for your honest review.

Edenh Real Review said...

Thank you.
I did not notice any information about the club for older kids. I am sorry that I cannot be of help there. Please let me know how your trip goes.

Well done, good review. My wife, our two children (2 & 4) and I will be there mid to late April. Sounds like a lot of the problems (but probably not all!) will be cleaned up by then. Do you think I can fit the two year old into the crib? Also I like to explore, are there rental cars available at the resort or should I get one at the airport? Again, well done and thank you. Gordon

Edenh Real Review said...

Hello- I don't think the hotel had a car rental available. I could be mistaken on that but if there was, it was well hidden. You could try calling the hotel and asking the phone number is 34 902 115 116.

As far as the crib, I think a two year old would fit. Its just a matter of making sure they don't try to stand in there or building a baracade like we did. Its a very dangerous situation otherwise.

Enjoy your trip.

Wonderful review! Did you happen to see any Jet ski rentals or boat rentals of any kind on the beach? If so, did you happen to see how much they run?

Thanks!

Edenh Real Review said...

I didn't see jet skis but the hotel does let you take out Hobi catamarans.

Thanks for the review. We'll be going during springbreak in March.

I'm confused regarding the buildings and rooms. If you don't want to be by construction and noise, what's the best building to request?

Oceanview rooms are what numbers?

Did you request special rooms before arriving?

Thanks

Edenh Real Review said...

Hello-

This is a good question, but unfortunately, I don't think I am going to be very good at answering it. While I was there, construction was going on in both of the buildings simultaneously, and in addition at other places in the resort (such as the theater and the grounds). Hopefully this will not be true by the time you get there, but given indications by very recently returned guests, the hotel is still very much unfinished.

The reason I got the ocean view room was because I had already been moved to two rooms and had requested to be moved to a new hotel because I didn't think Edenh was going to work out for us.

By a stroke of luck and alot of kind attention from the apple vacation rep, we were able to get a room on the 4th floor in the "club room" section in building 1. This was a big improvement, not just because of the view, but because of the dividing wall between the bathroom and sleeping area and because it was mostly quieter (minus the elevator issue mentioned in my review and some slamming doors blowing in the wind one night)

You could try to request an ocean view room when you get to the resort, but I think probably every other vacationer is making the same request. In general, I believe you have to upgrade your room to get an ocean view room, and you should do that before you go.

In our stay in the two other rooms, which faced the outside of the resort, we had two not-so-good views. One was a ground floor room in building 2--our view was of a black construction fence (if you happened to be in a higher room and could see over that fence, you'd be looking at the hotel laundry area).

In our second room at Edenh Real, on the second floor, we were treated to a view of a barbed wire fence which seperated the hotel from a neighboring complex which seemed to house local folks who liked to play dominos outside. This was definitely an improvement over our first room and was relatively interesting, just not what we were hoping for.

What I am trying to say is that if you can't get an ocean view room, ask for a room that faces the swimming pools, and not the outside.

Please let us know how your stay goes.

Anonymous said...

Hi, thanks so much for your review, very helpful.

We are a family of 4 leaving on Feb. 24. I have seen the pictures from people who got rooms on the opposite of pool view side. It is not nice. I have written to the hotel twice to request upgrading and they say it is not possible.

Do you think people can upgrade once they get there?

Thanks.

Edenh Real Review said...

Hello- This is a popular question. There is always luck and hope, but I am not sure how far you'll get trying to get a room with a better view. I base this on the fact that there will be so many other people who will want the same thing you do.

Good luck and please write back and let us know what's changed. Have a great time.

Can you tell me what the power outlets are like? Did your North American stuff plug in okay? Some are suggesting a modified extension cord that has the one larger prong filed down.

Thaks.

Edenh Real Review said...

I used my camera's battery charger without a hitch. I was under the impression they used the standard North American power outlets and the same current specifications.

Gee you've made me nervous that I won't enjoy my Graduation Trip any more.. I leave to go there in May.

I hope that things will be a bit different by then as Im sure they are working out any tweeks that need to be fixed coming from a new resort!

Edenh Real Review said...

I hope they will improve the things that they can improve for you by then (for instance more beach chairs so people won't have to lay in the sand, better planning at restaurants so folks won't have to wait for hours in lines to eat, better trained staff and additional staff in restaurants, front desk and on the maid service)...I would have thought they would have taken care of alot of this by now, but if you read other reviews for instance on Trip Advisor Dot Com, you'll see that things aren't getting better, even many weeks after I was last there.

Change hotels if you can, and if not, hope for the best. Its a really nice location so you're apt to have a good time in spite of the hotel issues.

Good evening !
Is it true that only one "a la carte" restaurant at Edenh allows children ? That would probably make us switch to another resort for our 2 weeks stay... Thank you !

Edenh Real Review said...

When I was there, only the French/Gourmet restaurant didn't allow children (although they allowed mine), but they do keep changing the rules to figure out what works...so that may be true now.

If you're going there any time soon, you should still try to change resorts if you can. Do a search on Travel Advisor and read the latest reviews--they are NOT good. If you can't change I am sure you'll have a good time anyway. Be sure and bring mosquito coils and alot of patience though.

2. If your staying @ the Eden htl can you hang out @ other resorts?

Hey, I'm 22 and going with my boyfriend down there. Are there neighboring resorts down there in which have good nightclubs>?

Thank you for the review. I am part of a group that will be traveling in July as part of a Radio promotion. I can't say that my last stay in Punta Cana was a nice one, we stayed then at the Sol Melia Bavaro Beach Resort which is a living nightmare.

It is understandable that in new hotel little things slip through the crack and issues arize but....the details in hotels are what matter. I can only say this. If you left the hotel without food poisoning you are good to go!

In our last trip to the above mentioned hotel, half of the crew (including yours truly) left Santo Domingo with somekind of food poisoning due to the buffets and other restaurants.

That hotel is very close to the one being reviewed here.

I can also tell you that as far as resorts are concerned in Santo Domingo are concerned I will only go to the Casa Campo area or the Palmas Paradisus Resort, other than that. Not ONE has convinced me as of yet in Punta Cana.

I would much rather go to Puerto Rico where the people are friendly, the food is good and the resorts are just as nice.

AMAZING review! I loved it! it really gave a down-to-earth perspective on the resort. Im going in the end of august so i REALLY hope the resort has changed since january.

Anonymous said...

Hi, thanks for your review.
I'll be headed to that hotel in September 2008 with my wife and 2 baby girls.

What floor would you recommend?
The 4th floor to avoid any over head noise or the ground floor which enables us to enter & exit the room from the back while the babies are napping?

Thank you

Edenh Real Review said...

I am not sure where is the best floor to stay on right now. Provided the elevators work now, which they probably do, the higher the better. Less noise and more likely you'll have a view of something good. The first floor would be good if you want a sliding glass door to walk out into the resort...

Anonymous said...

Hello again,

I just called the hotel to confirm my reservation, a guy called Edward was nice and helpfull on the phone.

I have 2 babies but he told me that they have only 4 cribs for the hole hotel !!!!

He told me that if I wanted a swimming pool /beach view I needed to pay an extra 55 $ (I didn't ask if it was a one time 55$ or per night, would you know?

Anyway, he kind of hinted that I might get the room without extra charge. it will probably depend on who books me when I arrive.

Anonymous said...

Hi, it's me again with my 2 baby girls, I have 2 questions:

1/Do they have a microwave oven I can use (I need to sterelize the milk bottles)? I called the hotel and the front desk told me they do not (I'm not sure he understood me).

2/ Do we have access to bottled drinking water (for the babies, tap water is not an option!!!)

Thank you very much for the info.

Edenh Real Review said...

Hi- I don't think there are microwave ovens in the "regular" rooms. Maybe you could bring a hot pot with you or one of those little electric bottle warmers? They should plugin and work fine there.

As far as the bottled water, it is readily available, just have to ask. You'll probably even find some in the fridge in the room.

I hope you'll figure something out for the crib there...a pack and play might be worthwhile to bring.

What a fantastic review. I know things have improved, but your review is the very best, by far!

We will be there in January 2009.
